Problem Water Series: Acidic Water or Low pH Water

Culligan

When you turn on the faucet at your sink, do you notice a red discoloration on the porcelain? Is the water flow weak? Does your water taste like metal? These could all be signs you have acidic water or water with a low pH.

What is acidic water? If your water has a low pH (less than 7) it is may be considered acidic. Acidity in water can have an adverse effect on the taste and quality of your water, as well as household pipes and fixtures. For example, acidic water can cause pipes to corrode at a higher rate. While plastic or concrete pipes can be resistant to corrosion, metal piping is especially affected by acidic water. Signs that you may have low pH or acidic water include:

  • Metal taste in water
  • Water that is red or blue-green colored
  • Red or blue-green stains on porcelain (if your pipes are iron or copper)
  • Slow water flow/pressure, accelerated deterioration of pipes

Since the plumbing in your house is an integral part of your daily routine – from brushing your teeth to washing your dishes – it is important to be aware of symptoms of problem water such as low pH/acidity. Dealing with an acidic water issue can also help homeowners address a potential problem before other problems are created.

If you suspect that you may have a low pH issue, or would like to have your water tested for acidity or contaminants, contact a water treatment specialist. Culligan is No. 1 in problem water treatment and has water professionals across the United States. Our team of water treatment experts know the problem water challenges and commonly occurring contaminants in their city, state and region.

*Contaminants are not necessarily in your water.
