Prince George, BC Water Problems

Common water issues in Prince George, and how to fix them

Ten pump stations, 15 reservoirs, and six wells make up Prince George’s water distribution system, sourcing and storing water from both the Nechako River and a system of groundwater wells for the homes and businesses of Prince George. Well water often has high concentrations of iron and hydrogen sulphide. Water is chlorinated and treated before reaching storage tanks, and tested regularly for quality. Water that is safe and well managed, however, doesn’t always taste, look, or work the way you’d prefer it to in your home. Some of the most common issues Prince George residents notice with their water stem from the city’s groundwater sourcing.

Hard, Poor-Quality Water

The majority of Prince George’s water comes from groundwater wells that tap aquifers beneath gravel deposits. This geographical feature can contribute to a higher concentration of minerals in the water, leading to:

  • Climbing utility bills
  • Dry, itchy skin
  • Scratchy, stiff laundry
  • Early appliance burnout

Stains and Discoloured Water

Discoloured water can make for a cleaning headache, in addition to being unpleasant to drink and look at. Generally a result of dissolved iron and other sediment, discoloured water contributes to reddish staining on sinks, tubs, fixtures, and toilet bowls.

Lime Buildup and White Stains

Prince George residents often notice other hard-to-miss signs of dissolved minerals, like calcium (calcium carbonate), in their water. Generally easy to spot, these deposits can cause:

  • Reduced capacity in faucets, taps, and pipes
  • Chalky, white residue buildup on fixtures and water-using appliances, like coffee makers and teakettles
  • Limescale residue on bathtubs, sinks, and toilet bowls

Tips From the Culligan Water Expert

A vinegar solution of one part water and one part vinegar can help clean lime buildup and stains from hard water, while a whole-home filtration system can stop those problems before they ever start.
