Happy World Water Day!
Organized by the United Nations, International World Water Day is held annually on March 22 as a means of focusing attention on the importance of fresh water and advocating for the sustainable management of fresh water resources.
This year’s campaign is focused on Water and Food Scarcity. The types of food we consume and the ways we manage water in food production are both critical to the sustainability of our freshwater resources.
Did you know that 90% of the world’s water consumption is used in food production? Or, that it takes ten times the amount of water to produce one pound of beef as it does to produce one pound of wheat? These facts and more are included in UN Water’s short video “The World is Thirsty Because it is Hungry”: http://www.unwater.org/worldwaterday/hungry_thirsty.html
