School’s out for summer and the hot weather is kicking in. As your kids increase their outdoor activities, don’t sweat it: it’s easy to keep them hydrated and feeling their best all summer long.

Become the Water Role Model

Ensuring your children get enough fluids is critical to helping them lead a healthy lifestyle. Proper hydration can increase energy levels, concentration and even physical endurance. Kids are often at a greater risk of becoming dehydrated – which can lead to cramps, heat exhaustion or even heatstroke1

As adults, it’s important help youngsters get in the habit of limiting caffeinated and sugary drinks, such as soda and fruit juice.   Parents should encourage kids to opt for water instead, and ensure they’re drinking before they get thirsty. In general the recommended daily water intake for a child is the number of ounces equal to two-thirds of his or her body weight2.

And, don’t forget, when it comes to staying hydrated that old adage “do as I say, not as I do” just won’t float. If you’re drinking more water – chances are you kids will, too.

Keep the Water Flowing

Hydration is especially important during prolonged physical activity. As a rule, the American Academy of Pediatrics suggests children weighing approximately 88 pounds should drink 5 ounces of water for every 20 minutes of physical activity and adolescents weighing approximately 132 pounds should drink about 9 ounces every 20 minutes of physical activity.  An ounce is equal to two tablespoons or a generous sip from a sports bottle.

Keep Your Kids Cool, and Help Green your Home

Providing your kids with clean, fresh tasting water is a snap when parents have access to bottled-water quality water at the touch of a button. A home drinking water system, such as Culligan’s Aqua-Cleer® Drinking Water System provides an endless supply of clean, refreshing drinking water right at the kitchen sink. Alternatively, Culligan’s bottled water delivery service ensures great tasting Culligan water is delivered right to your door.

Parents can also switch out disposable or recyclable plastic water bottles for reusable, non-toxic aluminum, BPA-free plastic or stainless steel water containers – making it easy, and environmentally friendly, for kids to get the hydration they need even when they’re on the go.

Get your children started on the path to healthy hydration today - ask your Culligan Dealer to recommend the drinking water system that’s right for you.
