The New Year is a time to reflect on the past and focus on the future. We all have our resolutions for the new year… lose weight, pay off debt, exercise more, get promoted, etc., but has your resolution ever been to conserve? It could entail turning off the lights when you leave a room, recycling more or maybe even learning to use less water. While some of these are good for the environment, some are also good for your wallet.

The average person in North America uses 80-100 gallons of water each day according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). To put things in perspective, it takes 36 gallons of water to fill a tub for a bath or two gallons per minute in the shower. That's a lot of water going down the drain each day. So what can you do to help save water and ensure future generations don't encounter a water crisis?

Here are a few tips*:

  • Use the dishwasher instead of washing dishes by hand
  • Designate one glass for your drinking water every day or refill a water bottle
  • Wash dark clothes in cold water, it saves water and energy, not to mention it helps retain the color of your clothing
  • Turn off the water while you brush your teeth (it can save up to four gallons per minute)
  • Keep your shower under five minutes (and save up to 1,000 gallons per month)
  • Water your summer lawn once every three days and your winter lawn once every five days
